BECAUSE I LIKE LOCAL ART... « Result #5 on Mar 25, 2007, 4:05pm »
I posted this in a few forums and maybe we could start here too:
I just put these three pictures together in a display for a theater group I work with. Someone was wondering how to market their name and get it out there... here is one of my ways.
I go to the rehearsals with my camera on high speed and silent and usually get tons of blurry shots on stage. They are great for me for figurative reference. So I try to get at least one good photo for each actor and they love me. Then I also promise to do ALL of them in either group shots or individually and hang them in the lobby. Originally it was for their fundraising and I would make color prints... but it was Not profitable for me or them. NOW this lot, is a nice three character piece they are doing at Theaterworks in Peoria and I am trying to sell ME. The pictures are 34x23" on paper with charcoal.
Here is a little demo of how they progress using a big fat stick of compressed charcoal like a paint brush.
I sketch it in very lightly... thought it would photograph but I got nothing, enhanced you can see faintly what is in there when I put the first layers in the background to define the shape:
I scale it up so I can see it and then really work from a little snapshot. I like to walk a lot when I do it to get the shapes so normally I just hold it, or tape it or other reference to the page.
First I try to establish the positions of the features: It is not pretty yet, but I use the side and the edge to make the piece with a bit of erasing for texture... Here is the stick: And of course you see the size I am working at.
Finished and signed:
And the other two:
I put out brochures on the easels with them and they have them available during and before the show. I get the chance to sell them to the actors at a discount or maybe even get recruited for another show.... possibly for pay next round! dj*
Some more exciting sites « Result #7 on Jul 11, 2006, 10:29am »
I know Cynthia and I some time just chat among ourselves here but you have no idea how valuable the net can be for networking and expanding your horizons.
This is a brand new site I found for people like me that do portraits of pets: http://www.pet-portraitartist.com Not only is it a very high skill level it is based in WALES UK, which always makes me feel like I am traveling when I am online!
join the site and participate, but this is a group of photos that the participants SPECIFICALLY UPLOAD for other artists to use as reference. It is polite to notify the photographer you intend to work from their picture and they love you to show what you did online, but this is where I do most of my work in my underwear. It is a great way to get your Grecian vistas and Arctic wolves without leaving home.
Remember these are NOT going to be the sort of work you can enter in competition (because the concept is not original) but nobody cares if you SELL THEM!! dj*

Thanks Robin and CJ. I price by medium. I do charcoal and watercolor but I am not sure what a tonal oil would be. I will DO anything. Sort of an art junkie!!
I came to check in!!! I have gotten involved with a bunch of UKC, that is the United Kennel Club which is about hunting, pointing and tracking dogs MOSTLY. They have hunts and events WAY more than the AKC. Unfortunately mostly in other states!!
I have a number of Coonhounds I did as commissions and here are two of the winners. This is a blue tick:
I am going to exchange a lot of internet advertising for it. I have to get a good website first!!
This is called a Treeing Walker:
And there are four other kinds of COONHOUNDS alone... I am a bit overwhelmed but doing my homework.
By the way, I just saw the Shemer catalog and TWO of my pets, a dog and a cat are on the cover!!! Take a look and sign up! They may increase my pay!!!

DJ, you do awesome work! Your portraits look great in black and white, the underdrawing, and with color. Do you get many requests for them in black and white?
